In statistics provided by the NHTSA, pedestrian fatalities most often took place in urban settings. In comparison, only 28 percent of pedestrian fatalities took place in rural areas in 2010. Contrary to what one might believe, 79 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred at a place other than an intersection. Whenever possible, cross the street at a designated crosswalk and always look before entering the street. Also be sure to walk on the sidewalk, facing traffic, whenever possible.
